Description:

Salt is a source of basic electrolytes: chlorine, sodium and potassium.
Sodium is responsible for maintaining electrolyte balance and osmotic pressure. It regulates the water balance in the intracellular and extracellular space, is responsible for the transfer of electrical charge in cell membranes and affects blood pressure. Excess sodium in the diet causes hypertension, negatively affects blood vessels (causes arterial stiffness), causes kidney and brain damage, electrolyte imbalance and water management in the body.
Sodium deficiency causes electrolyte imbalance, osmotic pressure, water balance in the body, brain and kidney dysfunction. In extreme cases, edema (inability to expel excess water), dementia, heart and brain problems, lethargy and death can occur.
Sodium, chlorine and potassium are macronutrients that are normally found mainly in foods of animal origin - meat, offal and body fluids such as blood, eggs, natural calcium supplements (calcium algae - calcium from red algae) and seaweed. For this reason, carnivores who have a balanced diet do not need salt supplements.

When do we serve salt?
- with an unbalanced cooked or raw diet
- in case of loss of electrolytes due to intense vomiting and diarrhoea
- we always take salt when we go with the dog to the water (reservoirs with fresh water). Dogs that like to play in water are exposed to overhydration, which causes a decrease in sodium concentration in body fluids, resulting in an inability to excrete water (sodium must be excreted to eliminate excess water), pulmonary edema. A few grains of salt should be given when we see that the dog has stopped excreting water (not urinating).
